Thirteen professional counselling associations from across Alberta have joined to form the Federation of Counselling Therapists. The group's ultimate goal is the creation of an Alberta College of Counselling Therapists. Currently, the practice of counselling is not regulated in Alberta, but professional associations have established standards, codes of ethics and complaints processes. The Federation is working on a definition of counselling so that they can submit a regulation request to the province. Alberta Health is consulting with stakeholders on the issue to determine the impact of regulation. Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia currently regulate counselling, and Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and British Columbia are considering the issue.
