The Illinois General Assembly's Joint Committee on Administrative Rules is currently considering changes to allow optometrists to perform advanced optometric procedures. A bill passed in 2016 allows for that option if optometrists meet education requirements as specified by a task force created by the law. The task force met but did not agree any requirements. In December 2017 the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation proposed rules based on recommendations of a member of the task force. The Illinois Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons opposes the proposed rules, indicating that the rulemaking process was not legal and that the education requirements are not adequate for performance of the advanced procedures.
