A report from the BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change reviewing professional reliance in the natural resource sector reviewed five professional regulators – Engineers and Geoscientists BC, agrology, applied science technology, applied biology, and professional forestry. The report recommended the establishment of an Office of Professional Regulation and Oversight to oversee the professional organizations. Another recommendation would see councils composed of at least 50% public representatives and at least 50% of council members appointed by the government rather than elected. The report recommends allowing professional organizations to regulate firms as well as individuals and legislating continuing professional development requirements. The recommendations also address ways to increase engagement with Indigenous governments.
