The Public Citizen's Health Research Group has published a research study on disciplinary actions taken by state medical boards related to sexual misconduct, using data from the National practitioner Data Bank. The research shows that in 90% of sexual misconduct cases by state medical boards, the disciplinary actions taken were serious - revocation, suspension or restriction of the medical license. The study also showed that 70% of physicians reported to the NPDB because of sexual misconduct sanctions imposed by hospitals were not subsequently disciplined by state medical boards. The study also points to underreporting of physician sexual misconduct, as physicians with sexual misconduct reports accounted for only 1% of the physicians reported to the NPDB.
