The Federation of State Medical Boards workgroup on physician wellness and burnout, convened in 2016, has issued its report with recommendations focusing on the licensing process. The report questions the necessity of asking questions about an applicant's mental health, addiction or substance use on applications or renewals, as this may discourage applicants from seeking treatment. The report suggests that this information may be obtained through alternate means. If such questions are deemed necessary, the report offers suggestions about question phrasing and focus on current impairment only. The report also suggests offering safe haven non-reporting options to physicians who are under treatment with a physician health program.
