An independent reviewer has reported "gaps and failings" with the way the Law Society of Ontario serves the indigenous community. The Law Society's treasurer has indicated that the changes recommended in the report will begin immediately related to ways of gathering evidence, conducting hearings, and cross-examinations. Recommendations include establishing a culturally competent regulatory process, considering the establishment of a new office to support the Law Society's work involving indigenous communities, ensuring that communications are culturally appropriate, development of a cultural liaison, and exploring ways to incorporate principles of indigenous legal systems within the adjudicative and dispute resolution processes.
