An alternative licensure program for teachers in Mississippi allows individuals to begin teaching on a three-year temporary license based on a degree outside of the subject area they would be teaching as long as they meet ongoing requirements to make progress towards full licensure. The alternative licensure program was implemented as a way to deal with a severe teacher shortage in the state. However, many schools are now finding that those teaching under the temporary licensure program have not met the requirements of passing exams towards full licensure. The Mississippi State Department of Education has indicated that the requirements has been shared with schools and teachers.
