Twenty states currently ban conversion therapy, therapy aimed at changing people's sexual orientation or gender identity, on minors; and five states have partial bans. The American Psychological Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Medical Association have spoken out against the practice. In some states without bans, former patients are filing complaints with the licensing boards against practitioners, citing "serious and lasting harm" and that the practice "violates various professional and ethical rules." A complaint to the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council was denied because it was not considered "timely," but a motion has been filed for a rehearing.
